Sloane Joseph
Sloane Joseph was born and raised in Redwood City, California. Her work started at San Jose State University with a degree in Studio Art and finished in the winter of 2010 where she studied several avenues of arts and crafts. Sloane decided to pursue her MFA in painting and drawing at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2014. She is due to graduate with her MFA in Spring 2017. It was here that Sloane had a proper outlet for her creativity between the increased knowledge of her field and the motivation and precise feedback from her professors.
She has been working for an art and framing retailer for the past 10 years as an art framer. Being a framer has allowed her to meet hundreds of other artists, see thousands of art pieces from around the world and hear the stories behind the art which is motivational for her own work. She is especially interested in sunlight and the shadows it creates. These behaviors of light are what she enjoys representing and she typically works in morning or sunset lighting.
Sloane was awarded Best In Show from the San Mateo County Fair in 2010 for her numerous awarded entries as well as for her favored works in the show. She participated as a Mural Designer for the Girl Scouts of American in Redwood City, CA in 2007 and was invited to show her work at the Pancakes and Booze collaborative art show in 2015 and 2016. Sloane has an upcoming exhibit in downtown Redwood City for the Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation where she will be displaying one of her skyscape pieces.

Statement
I grew up in northern California surrounded by never ending natural scenery. Every month, my mom would take my sisters and I out to the park or the beach where we could play outside and she would tell us the history of these places. She also sent us to summer camp two weeks out of the summer where we would hike and explore everyday while learning about the outdoors. These early influences directly resulted in my passion for landscape painting and why I wanted to purse it in my body of work. These paintings capture places that I have visited in California such as Monterey, Morgan Hill and Yosemite as well as the joyful and soothing mood that a beautiful sunny day instills. I chose to use oil paint for this work because of the richness and vividness in color that oil paint has. This series of work depicts scenes from the early afternoon because I enjoy the way that the warmer afternoon light appears in terms of color as well as how its hits the surrounding landscape and the cooler shadows it creates.
The reason I pursue landscape painting is because of my love for nature and my appreciation for being raised in California. Even as a child, I was always staring into the sky, observing the trees, feeling the leaves and trying to draw them. Nature continuously fascinates me for its resilience and its ability to give life as quickly as it can be taken away. Being able to put it on canvas helps me express this sentiment. The moment that solidified my interest in nature was first time my mom brought me to a tide pool in Monterey. While she and I would watch the waves bring in and take away new life, she showed me that even little tide pools had a world of beauty within. From there on I would closely observe my natural surroundings for interesting parts that you would not see at first glance.
My work reflects an understanding of light and shadow while being able to exaggerate certain qualities within the work to create a beautiful and emotional landscape painting. With use of soft and gestural brushstrokes, I create varying depths and atmospheric perspective to give a sense of space and time.
